The “Route 66 Rivalry” was born in the 1885 World Series, when the Chicago Cubs (then the White Stockings) and the St. Louis Cardinals (then the Browns) threw their first pitches and so began a dispute that continues to this day.
1886
‘The $15,000 Slide’
With the World Series on the line in extra innings, Browns center fielder, Curt Welch, slid home from a wild pitch and secured victory and with it $500 for each Browns player. A small fortune back in the day.
1945
‘The Curse of
the Billy Goat’
A Greek immigrant, and his pet goat, turned up to Wrigley Field, World Series, Game 4, with two tickets; one for himself, one for his goat. The goat’s owner was refused entry and he placed a curse on the Cubs. They lost the Series and would endure a 108-year wait for a World Series Championship.
1964
The ‘worst trade in Cubs history’
The trade of a Cubs, Lou Brock, for impressive Cardinals star pitcher Ernie Broglio proved a disaster for the ’64 Cubs and propelled Brock to two World Series titles, a place in the Hall of Fame and infamy. Sadly, Broglio disappeared from The Majors two years later to anonymity.
2011
Cardinals win their 11th World Series
With a series going back and forth, Cardinals Albert Pujols hit three home runs in Game 3, a World Series feat only achieved by the legendary Reggie Jackson and Babe Ruth. However, Game 7’s 24-hour rain delay meant Cardinals ace pitcher Chris Carpenter had all the rest needed to clinch the Series for the Cardinal Nation.
2015
Cardinals and the Cubs play in the Postseason for the first time
For the first time the Cardinals and the Cubs played each other in the Postseason in the 2015 National League Division Series. The Cubs went on to defeat the Cardinals 3-1 to advance to the National League Championship Series
2016

A dramatic, nail-biting, nerve-jangling, historic come from behind 3-1 deficit and finally relief for Cub fans bringing an end to the tag ‘Lovable Losers!’ and an end to a 108-year wait for a World Series Championship.
